Thousands of Volusia and Flagler county residents made a difference Saturday, walking to raise money for breast cancer, handing out bicycle helmets to children, building homes and doing dozens of other good deeds.
The weather was wonderful, and 44 projects were finished, up a couple from last year. The total number of volunteers is expected to be about 7,800.
While all the events were tied to USA Weekend's national Make A Difference Day, several were part of additional national efforts, such as the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and the Down Syndrome Association's Buddy Walk. The crowd at Riverfront Park for the Strides was estimated by police at 10,000, and more than $285,000 had been raised by pre-registration.
Included among the volunteers were military personnel, officers and volunteers with the Student Government Association at Daytona State College, volunteers from the United Cerebral Palsy of Central Florida, volunteers for Habitat for Humanity, and two Kiwanis Kids Safety Fairs.
What a great turnout to reinforce our commitment to the Daytona Beach community. Many thanks to all who volunteered.
