Daytona Beach Volunteers work for Coastal Cleanup Day

More than 800 volunteers participated in International Coastal Cleanup Saturday, Sept. 19. The event is worldwide. At last year's Cleanup, nearly 400,000 volunteers collected more than 6.8 million pounds of trash in 100 countries and 42 US states — the largest volunteer effort of its kind.

Here in Daytona, whether it was for school credit, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Junior Lifeguards or just a way to give back to the beach for the good times, 882 volunteers hit the coast to pick up 4,171 pounds of trash at 11 sites. No totals were available from one Volusia site or Flagler sites.

Organizers at Volusia County's environmental management department said they were thrilled that the reported turnout and trash collected were greater than last year. "It was beautiful -- seeing students who looked like they just rolled out of bed," said Debra Woodall, a professor of oceanography at Daytona State College who was registering at Sun Splash Park, which reported a 1,000 pounds collected, the most of any site.

Visit the Ocean Conservancy to learn about ocean trash, organizing your own cleanup day next year, and read the data reports. The magnitude of the problem is staggering. They state, "Providing food, fresh water and oxygen to the world, the ocean is essential to all life on Earth, but it is in serious trouble from overuse and pollution. Ocean Conservancy believes it’s time to change our national policies to protect entire ecosystems as the surest way to solve the most critical ocean conservation challenges we face. The ocean belongs to everyone and everyone is needed to protect it. To get there, we must collaborate across political lines and with new partners from all walks of life."

Think of our resources and marine mammals next time you start to throw away a cigarette but or pop can on the beach. Here is a video of the Marine Wildlife and Seascape Photo Contest Winners for 2009.
