City Manager Jim Chisholm told members of the Daytona Beach Economic Development Board at a special meeting that better transit, new roads, new parks, neighborhood improvements and new visions will be funded in anticipation of a renewed economy. "If we only focused on the economy and the state of the county, we would be a very sad people," Chisholm said. "We have a brighter view of what's happening in Daytona Beach."
Daytona will be partnering with Volusia County and the federal government to meet its transportation needs. As reported by the News-Journal, some examples of planned public works are:
"An International Speedway Boulevard Corridor Coalition is working to address and mesh a variety of long-term needs of the city, residents, universities and businesses along the busy roadway from the beach to past Interstate 95. The state has provided a $300,000 transportation study grant while the federal government chipped in $500,000 for the transit element.
"The city, county and Consolidated Tomoka Land Co. are using $10 million in stimulus money to extend Dunn Avenue west over I-95 to Tomoka Farms Road. That could start early next year.
"The city and county also are planning improvements on Williamson Boulevard north of Dunn Avenue.
"Local officials are pushing for an $18 million allotment in the federal transportation bill to widen U.S. 92 from I-95 west to the I-4 access ramp. It has made the initial cut."
Roads are not the only projects in the planning stages. The city has spent $1 million for 2 new parks, and a 3rd is planned. A new fire station, public school, and private school on LPGA Blvd. are ready to go. The city recently purchased the lease for the pier and plans to renovate the Boardwalk. Consultants are working on city-core improvements to include better flood control, parks and open spaces, rebuilding Orange Avenue with a $20 million grant application and some reuse of the old police station.
This is an exciting time to be a part of Daytona Beach, to feel the energy. With real estate prices so low, residents and property owners are poised for future appreciation and to share in the growth which will follow these public improvements.
