Now that the Gulf Coast oil has entered the Gulf Stream and may reach the eastern shores of Florida, counties along the ocean are readying plans to deal with the disaster.
Watch a video of Volusia County's Oil Slick plan here. Officials are worried the oil may eventually reach the Intercoastal Waterway through Ponce Inlet, the waters of which are even more vulnerable than the Atlantic. "If it gets on the mangroves ... it gets in the grasses and the marshes, it could sink down into the oysters ... it does a whole lot more damage to the ecology," said Charlie Craig, Emergency Management Director.
Emergency officials said they will consider placing containment booms in Ponce Inlet, should the need arise.
