Embry-Riddle of Daytona Beach to Offer Doctoral Programs

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has approved doctoral degrees, and the programs will be enrolling students next year. 10 will start in January, 2010, 10 more will be added in September, 2010, and 10 every September thereafter. The courses will be offered online.

The Ph.D.s in aviation and engineering physics are the first such degrees offered in the Daytona Beach area. The aviation doctorate, university officials believe, will be the first offered in the world. And for Embry-Riddle, the degrees should result in greater esteem in academic circles, improved competitiveness in attracting students and a chance to generate more corporate research dollars. The programs will also attract undergraduates, and increase the school's reputation in industry circles, with companies like Boeing. That, in turn, would produce more job opportunities for graduates, and more financial contributions. Embry-Riddle hopes to find industry partners in developing an applied-research park near the Daytona Beach campus.

Because of the PhD programs, or through academic work to obtain the degree, research in areas such as Flight safety, Air-traffic efficiency, Airport security, Space and upper-atmosphere physics, and Satellite control dynamics will increase. Embry-Riddle is investing more than $1M into starting the degree programs, which officials feel will be indirectly offset by grants and gifts.

"We want to be the place where the aviation industry turns for solutions to real-world problems, and we're doing that," university President John Johnson said in an interview this week. Johnson, named president in 2006, has been working to bring doctoral programs to the university almost since he first arrived as provost in 2004.

"I am really not interested in being a big fish in a small pond," Johnson said. "Whether I'm No. 1 or No. 2, I want to be a big fish in a big pond," he said. "I feel, and this is the honest-to-God's truth, Embry-Riddle can compete with anybody on this planet when it comes to aviation and aerospace engineering." U.S. News & World Report ranked the school No. 1 in aerospace engineering at universities that offer master's degrees.
